Le attesissime nominations agli Oscar 2021 hanno da un lato confermato alcuni verdetti dell’Awards Season e dall’altro deluso per una serie di esclusioni inaspettate rispetto ai Film Critics Association Awards.
Bottino interessante per l’Italia che può vantare non solo l’attesa nomination per la miglior canzone originale “Io Sì (Seen)” di Diane Warren, Laura Pausini e Niccolò Agliardi, ma anche quella per il Best Make up & Hair (Mark Coulier, Dalia Colli, Francesco Pegoretti) e per il Best Costume designer (Massimo Cantini Parrini) per il film Pinocchio di Matteo Garrone.
Tra i candidati in vetta c’è l’iconico omaggio di David Fincher alla Hollywood degli anni 30′ e 40′, Mank (10 nominations). Confermato il terzetto capitanato da Daniel Kaluuya per Judas and the Black Messiah, seguito dai suoi due sfidanti: l’eclettico Sacha Baron Cohen per The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Music City Film Critics Association Award,) e Leslie Odom Jr. per One Night in Miami (New York Film Critics Online Award) che prima della distribuzione del film di Shaka King si erano contesi i principali premi. Riesce ad entrare nella cinquina anche il caratterista Paul Raci per Sound of Metal che ha aveva dalla sua parte numerosi riconoscimenti assegnati dalla critica americana (National Society of Film Critics Award) ma la sua esclusione dai premi chiave lasciava presagire una fumata nera.
A SORPRESA: tra i nominati spicca il nome di Lakeith Stanfield che è riuscito a conquistare la nomination per la sua prova nel film Judas and the Black Messiah nonostante fosse stato “proposto” per la categoria Miglior attore.

MIGLIOR ATTRICE NON PROTAGONISTA
Fin dai primissimi riconoscimenti dell’Awards Season si è rivelata una categoria particolarmente “dinamica” tra sorprendenti nominations e verdetti che a sorpresa hanno di volta in volta cambiato le carte in tavola. Ragion per cui ci aspettavamo tutti una cinquina “aperta” a varie possibilità. Rispetto alle previsioni generali si conferma leader Youn Yuh-jung per Minari dopo aver vinto un numero vertiginoso di premi tra cui il Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award (è stata però esclusa dai Golden Globe). Tallonata dall’attrice rivelazione del film comico Borat Subsequent Movie Film, Maria Bakalova che aveva dalla sua parte numerosi premi assegnati delle associazioni dei critici americani tra cui il prestigioso National Society of Film Critics Award. Seguono Olivia Colman per The Father (AACTA International Award) e Amanda Seyfried per Mank (Satellite Award), Glenn Close per Hillbilly Elegy (Nevada Film Critics Society Award).

A SORPRESA: escluso il pluricandidato sceneggiatore Aaron Sorkin alla sua seconda prova da regista con The Trial of the Chicago 7 con cui aveva ottenuto la nomination ai premi chiave (Satellite Award, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Award, DGA Award).
Fuori dai giochi anche Regina King per One Night in Miami. Un’esclusione che però era diventata possibile nelle ultime settimane nonostante la candidatura a tutti i premi chiave (ad eccezione dei Satellite Awards e dei BAFTA). “Dentro” il danese Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round) candidato ai BAFTA e ai Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards e vincitore dell’European Film Award.

Escluso anche I’m No Longer Here scritto e diretto da Fernando Frías de la Parra (Messico) che aveva dalla sua parte non solo ben 10 Ariel Awards (gli Oscar messicani) ma anche la candidatura ai Satellite Awards, agli Hollywood Critics Association Film Awards, una ai Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, una ai Golden Reel Awards (MPSE), e anche una ai prestigiosi DGA Awards.
