Assegnati i British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) i famosi premi britannici che annualmente celebrano il cinema indipendente. I loro verdetti permettono di capire quali sono le produzioni indipendenti in lingua inglese che potrebbero diventare dei potenziali competitors per gli Oscar, anche se la loro corrispondenza con i verdetti degli Academy Awards è piuttosto bassa dato che su 25 edizioni solo 2 volte il vincitore del Miglior Film ai British Independent Film Awards ha vinto poi l’Oscar come miglior pellicola dell’anno: The Millionaire (2008) e Il discorso del Re (2010).
Anche se lo scorso anno nessuno dei verdetti dei BIFA è stato confermato agli Oscar, in compenso 2 vincitori su 17 categorie corrispondenti (La persona peggiore del mondo per il Miglior film internazionale e La signora Harris va a Parigi per i Migliori costumi) hanno ottenuto la successiva nomination.
Tra i vincitori di quest’anno spicca All of Us Strangers che ha trionfato in ben 7 categorie tra cui Miglior film e Miglior regia. Seguono How to Have Sex (3 premi) e Femme (3 premi).
L’acclamato film vincitore della Palma d’Oro a Cannes, Anatomy of a Fall ha conquistato il BIFA per il Miglior film internazionale dopo aver vinto il Gotham Award e il premio dei critici di New York, rendendo per ora aperta la gara per questa categoria, dato che non potrà ottenere la candidatura visto che la Francia ha scelto The Taste of Things.
